Music For Youth’s Frequencies programme is a scheme to help musicians aged 16-21 years old develop their careers in music. This year, a new playlist on Soundcloud has been released each day throughout the MFY Remix 2021 digital festival, containing 10 songs each made by the Frequencies artists.
Having listened to the playlist throughout the festival week, I would love to share just some of the amazing talent of those involved with Frequencies. Here are my top 5 songs from MFY Remix 2021’s Frequencies Playlist.
From Frequencies Playlist- REMIX:
Laura Jazmyn- Let Me Live Forever
Welsh contemporary pop singer, Laura Jazmyn, draws her influences from soulful artists such as Amy Winehouse and Celeste. Beginning her music career back in 2019, Laura loves to write songs full of meaning that the listener can interpret in their own relatable way.
To be the first artist all of the Frequencies playlists for MFY Remix 2021 is a big task. The track has to be amazing to make us listen further, it has to show the talent MFY’s young musicians hold. Laura Jazmyn’s song ‘Let Me Live Forever’ lives up to this task and exceeded my expectations even further!
I chose ‘Let Me Live Forever’ because I am captivated every time I listen to this song. Forming a wonderful balance between a calm instrumental and the pleading, desperate vocals, Laura has created a beautiful song with powerful emotions that grip the listener from the first lyric. My favourite line would be, ‘trapped inside a spell that you possess over me’, as I love the haunting metaphor. Laura’s poetic song writing is evident throughout the entire track, so I could not recommend highly enough to listen to ‘Let Me Live Forever’, alongside the rest of the Frequencies Playlist- Remix.

From Frequencies Playlist- Innovated:
Chiika- Saviour
Chiika is a London based singer-songwriter. Starting to work with MFY since the beginning of this year, Chiika focuses her work on her relationships, hopes and self-reflection. Deanna and I conducted an interview with Chiika, which can be found on the MFY Remix 2021 podcast on Music For Youth’s Soundcloud.
Wednesday’s ‘Innovate’ theme surrounding this playlist is perfectly encapsulated by the chilled vibes, alongside the strong lyrics featured in Chiika’s track ‘Saviour’. Chiika’s singing vocals float perfectly over the beat accompanying her, in contrast her hook is like a rhythmic chant.
I chose ‘Saviour’ from the Innovate playlist because I find Chiika’s creation unique and exciting. Additionally, the lyrics are creative and fresh, such as “you risk taker, roll the dice, my coin at stake”. By just listening to this one track, you can hear the artist’s hard work and determination to achieve success in the music industry, so I hope we can all support Chiika’s exciting future! Give ‘Saviour’ a listen, as well as the rest of the amazing talent featured in Frequencies Playlist- Innovate.

From Frequencies Playlist- Reconfigured:
Luke Sitaraman- Burning Bridges
Luke Sitaraman is a London based producer, guitarist and singer-songwriter. Influenced by jazz, soul and alternative music, Luke creates a diverse range of music, working alongside other musicians to create his tracks.
Burning Bridges’ has a Latin-jazz crossed with indie-pop style, defining the ‘Reconfigured’ theme to Thursday’s playlist. All these genres fused together have created a sophisticated, groovy single, that gets better with every listen.
I chose ‘Burning Bridges’ as I thoroughly enjoyed the musical lines, accompanying Luke’s calming vocals. I especially enjoy the bassline and the use of the synth, the music has me grooving right now as I write this post! Once again, MFY’s Frequencies artists are showing their talent for writing excellent lyrics, this time the line “I was told I could fix it, I’ll put that in my thesis” really caught my attention! Make sure to listen to and enjoy Luke’s track, as well as the entire Frequencies Playlist- Reconfigured.

From Frequencies Playlist- ReCreate:
Gabrielle Bongo- Everything Waiting For You
Gabrielle Bongo is a producer, composer and songwriter from South London. At just seventeen years old, Gabrielle is a talented young musician, who focuses on hope and perseverance in her music.
‘Everything Waiting For You’ is a light drum and bass, pop track, featuring the soulful vocals of Amethyst. This track is Gabrielle’s debut song, which shows just how much potential she has to achieve greatness in the near future.
I chose this track because I really enjoyed the hopeful lyrics and music behind the vocals. The line “just hold on, the days are getting better as they go” was lovely to hear and reminded me how powerful music can be to inspire and motivate us to carry on. I also love the strength of this song, the upbeat tempo and the DnB style really help to make an impact on the listener. When you are feeling down, put on ‘Everything Waiting For You’ to inspire and lift your spirits! Also, check out the rest of the Frequencies Playlist- Recreate

From Frequencies Playlist- Discover:
Deecien- Focus on Me
From West London, Deecien has been song-writing since just 13 years old. Since beginning his career in 2018, he has headlined Lovebox Festival and Notting Hill Carnival and has opened for huge UK artists Jorja Smith and Krept & Konan. Energetic and skilful, Deecien shows his talent through his songs and never forgets his Caribbean roots in his music.
‘Focus on Me’ is a catchy hip-hop and Caribbean influenced track, building on what UK artists have made and upgrading it further by adding his own fresh sound to it, making Deecien a great discovery for the music industry.
I chose this track, I really enjoyed how the music instantly made me want to dance along, not to mention how pleasing the bassline is to the ears. I also enjoyed boldness of the lyric “One plus one is one when I’m with you”, I think it shows Deecien’s confidence, something a great artist needs. Additionally, the production quality of ‘Focus on Me’ is polished and sounds like Deecien has been in this industry for years, not just from 2018! I see Deecien making great commercial success in the near future, so it will be exciting to watch his progress in the next few years! Make sure to check out this track, as well as the rest of the Frequencies Playlist- Discover.
Those were my favourites from each Frequencies playlist released throughout MFY Remix 2021, however there are so many more talented artists featured every day. It is so important to support upcoming talent, so give a listen to the playlists!
